What Is It?
Fort Jacque is located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in the Montagne Noire mountains. It’s near the top of the Central Valley, 4,934 feet above the city. The Division General of the Haitian military, Alexandre Pétion, foresaw that the colonizers might not let Haitians enjoy their freedom for too long. In order to prevent the French from returning to seize control of the island again, he oversaw the construction of two forts: Fort Alexandre and Fort Jacques. Fort Alexandre was named after himself but For Jacque was named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the Haitian emperor at the time. Fort Jacques’s location was not taken lightly. The fort still stands today. You can see the entire bay of Port-au-Prince from the Battlements.
